Collecting Payments with Tap to Pay

Tap to Pay allows you to accept contactless payments directly on your compatible mobile device, turning your phone into a payment terminal without any extra hardware.

*Note: Tap to Pay requires a stable internet connection (Wi-Fi or cellular). Encircle users require Standard or Admin permissions to collect and request payments; users with Limited permissions cannot access this feature.

Follow these steps to take a payment:

  1. In the claim where you’ll be taking payment, tap the 3 bars at the top right corner of the claim.
  2. Tap Request Payment.

  3. Select Tap to Pay as the payment method.
  4. Enter a Description for this transaction. *This description will appear on the receipt.
  5. Enter an Amount for this transaction.
    • *Note that a $250 limit applies to tap transactions in Canada. You may send a payment request or conduct multiple tap transactions if you need to charge more than $250.
  6. Customer info will auto-populate from the claim, but can be edited as needed. An email address will be required for the receipt.
  7. Click Tap to Pay

  8. Present your phone to the customer and they can simply tap their contactless card or NFC-based mobile wallet (like Apple Pay or Google Pay) directly onto your phone. PIN entry is supported where required.

The transaction will process immediately and an instant digital receipt will be sent to the customer via email.

Important Information for Canadian Users Regarding Tap to Pay Limits

For users in Canada, there is a specific $250 transaction limit for Tap to Pay without requiring a PIN.

Many Canadian-issued cards are designed for offline PIN entry, which typically requires physical insertion into a device. This functionality is not supported with Tap to Pay, meaning certain cards may not allow PIN entry via the mobile device screen for amounts over $250. This means that for payments exceeding $250 CAD, customers may need to use a different payment method if their card requires a physical PIN entry not supported by Tap to Pay.

Supported Payment Types

Tap to Pay on iPhone includes support for Visa, Mastercard, American Express contactless cards, and NFC-based mobile wallets (Apple Pay and Google Pay). PIN entry is supported. Additionally, Discover is supported in the US, Interac is supported in Canada.

Tap to Pay on Android includes support for Visa, Mastercard, American Express contactless cards, and NFC-based mobile wallets (Apple Pay and Google Pay). PIN entry is supported.

Supported Devices

Tap to Pay on iPhone requires an iPhone XS or later running:

  • iOS 17.0 or later in the United States
  • iOS 17.4 or later in Canada

It is recommended that users update to the latest iOS version for the best performance.

Tap to Pay on Android works with a variety of Android devices such as mobile phones, kiosks, tablets, handheld devices, and so on. You can only discover and connect to devices that meet all of the following criteria:

  • Has a functioning, integrated NFC sensor and ARM-based processor
  • Isn’t rooted and device bootloader is locked and unchanged
  • Runs a current version of Android (Android 11 or above)
  • Uses Google Mobile Services and has the Google Play Store app installed
  • Has a hardware backed keystore
  • Supports generating key pairs using a variety of key algorithms, including RSA and AES from the Android keystore
  • A stable connection to the internet
  • Runs the unmodified manufacturer provided OS

 

Sending Payment Requests on Mobile

A payment request is a secure link sent to a payee via text or email. This allows them to conveniently pay online using a credit card or ACH, serving as an alternative to Tap to Pay when a card is not physically present or when initiating payment from the office is not possible.

To send a payment request from the mobile app:

  1. In the claim where you’ll be taking payment, tap the 3 bars at the top right corner of the claim.
  2. Tap Request Payment

  3. Select Payment Request as the payment method.
  4. Enter a Description for this transaction.
    • *This description will appear on the payee’s payment page and receipt.
  5. Enter an Amount for this transaction.
    • *There is no transaction limit on payment requests.
  6. Customer info will auto-populate from the claim, but can be edited as needed. An email address will be required for the receipt. If Email and Phone Number are both filled out here, the recipient will receive the payment request link by email and text. 
  7. Click Send Request

Sending Payment Requests on Web

To send a payment request from the web app:

  1. From the claim Overview tab, click Send Payment Request

  2. Enter a Description for this transaction.
    • *This description will appear on the payee’s payment page and receipt.
  3. Enter an Amount for this transaction.
    • *There is no transaction limit on payment requests.
  4. Customer info will auto-populate from the claim, but can be edited as needed. An email address will be required for the receipt. If Email and Phone Number are both filled out here, the recipient will receive the payment request link by email and text.
  5. Click Send Request

Customer Payment

The payee will receive the request via email and/or text. They will open the link and securely enter their debit/credit card or ACH bank transfer information, or use their digital wallet (like Apple Pay or Google Pay) to complete the payment.

For your customers to receive automatic receipts for payments made via payment request/link, you need to go into your Stripe dashboard and enable this setting. Receipts are automatic for tap payments, but receipts for payment link payments are handled by Stripe's API.
